I basically read this book in one sitting. I don’t know whether it was intentional or not, but for me the experience was like watching Casino or Goodfellas only it’s about reptile obsessed smugglers. The book itself is really cinematic and it never loses momentum. It’s also kind of like Narcos before that was a show only it has only a little bit of drugs and a metric tons of smuggled reptiles.The access the author was able to obtain with the Van Nostrands make this book truly special. He doesn’t really judge these people but he gives you enough to make your own assessment, a method that is really lacking in journalism today. I don’t need an author to tell me that someone who just lets a bunch of iguanas live and die in crowded and inhumane conditions is terrible behavior.With solid and entertaining writing and subject matter that is interesting and bizarre this book delivers.
